“…and they stumbled in together, drunk off their asses, and fell into bed together. The next morning I found them snoring off-key and drooling on Carter’s pillow.” Dan finished telling a story from college that Riley had completely forgotten, and everyone laughed uproariously. He’d been reminiscing and entertaining the crowd with stories from Riley and Carter’s past for the better part of an hour and his audience was rapt.
Riley turned to Will to say something about not being able to get a word in edgewise at his own party, but Will abruptly stood and disappeared through the door onto the balcony. Riley watched him for a moment while he paced, stopping only to toss back the contents of his glass. Concerned, Riley followed him.
He closed the door behind him and shivered when the icy wind hit, snowflakes pelting his cheeks. “What are you doing out here in this weather?” he asked Will.
Will turned to look at him. “What the hell are you doing, Riley?” His tone was weary.
“What do you mean?” Riley asked, the wine making his head a little muddled.
“Am I the only one who watches you and Carter together and sees that you two love each other?” he shouted. Riley startled and took half a step back. “How much longer do you expect me to sit here waiting for you to let go of him and want to be with me?”
The words hung in the cold winter air for a long moment and Riley’s stomach tumbled to his toes. Was Will right? They’d been dating for almost a year. Will was in love with him. And while Riley cared for Will, he couldn’t say that he loved him. After a year, shouldn’t he?
Will had been nothing but patient with him, but it was clear Riley couldn’t give Will what he needed.
Riley swallowed hard, sad and disappointed in himself. He’d tried his best to focus on Will in the last few months, and yet it clearly wasn’t enough.
There was only one person Riley was in love with and it wasn’t Will. It was Carter.
Even Will saw that.
God, he’d been a shitty boyfriend. No matter what he did, he seemed to hurt Will, and that wasn’t fair to him at all. What choice did he have but to end the relationship?
In the long run, it would be better for both of them.
“God, Will, I’m so sorry,” he said hoarsely.
Will offered him a sad smile. “Yeah, me, too.”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” Riley said. “You’ve been amazing. I’m just…we’re not…” He couldn’t find the words to explain. “I don’t think I can be what you need,” he finally managed. “I want to be, but you’re right, it’s been almost a year. I can’t keep asking you to put your feelings aside and wait for me to catch up.” He laughed sadly. “Maybe I’m just not capable of it.”
Will shook his head. “Don’t you see it, Riley? It’s Carter. It’s always been Carter for you. I never doubted
